Visit of the historic mediaval town of Piancastagnaio and of its majestic Aldobrandesca castle, to admire an astonishing view of the Paglia valley crossed by the homonymous river.

The history of this quiet and quaint Tuscan town is similar to the other small centers around Mount Amiata: it was originally a possession of the abbey of the nearby town of Abbadia San Salvatore, which lost its sovereignity since the 13th century. The Aldobrandeschi family provided the town fortifications during the period of encastellation. Thereafetr the control over the territory of Piancastagnaio changed hands during the years in a series of battles and conflicts between the powerful feudal families of the nearby lands.

The town is subdivided into four ‘contrade’ (districts), which take part in the historical horse race called ‘Palio’. The historic centre of Piancastagnaio still reminds visitors of its ancient origins, showing all its splendid characteristics of mediaval centre. Buildings, structures and churches are capable of taking our minds back in time and experience the uniqueness of this town and its landscapes.
