Visiting “Vetta Amiata” (Amiata summit) is for sure an experience to live.
You can reachthe Amiata summit parking area in Località Pianello at about 1600 mt by car and then continue through the small path leading to the summit at 1738 mt or you can take the hiking trail starting at 1400 mt an get to the summit crossing the forest. The last section of the walk is a little harder, but you will be rewarded by the magnificent view from the top: on clear days it is possible to see the lakes of Bolsena and Trasimeno, the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, the valleys of the Maremma and the hills of Chianti; and one can also see the “Colline Metallifere” (the metal-bearing hills, and those in Umbria and Lazio (the Sabine hills); actually the view from the Amiata summit is the widest view in Central Italy.
On the top of Amiata you can find an iron cross, much revered by the locals (22 m. high constructed in 1910) and the sculpture of the Madonna of the Scouts.
For hiking enthusiasts we suggest the Capomacchia trail, starting from a lower height. During the walk you can enjoy the beautiful beech forest with its flavors, colors and views changing season by season.
