Mont Amiata: Ancient Volcano

Only a few know that the Mount Amiata, the prodigious treasure that enriches the landscapes of Tuscany Maremma and the Val D'Orcia, is an extinct volcano.
And it is exactly this particular that makes the Amiata and the surrounding valleys a unique territory, rich in resources and great charm.

Nowadays we have important evidence of past volcanic activity: lava domes on top of the mountain, waters springs on the slope, thermal water pools downhill.

Well known spa resorts of southern Tuscany like Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo and Saturnia draw their own sources from the mountain: waters that filter deep down are heated by the magma of the volcano and rise to the surface in the form of jets or abundant thermal springs with beneficial properties.
The hyper-thermal waters of Mount Amiata are classified as sulphurous-sulphate-calcium-magnesium and thanks to the many dissolved minerals possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant properties. They are good waters for the treatment of bones and joints diseases, dermatological, respiratory issues but also for the care of ears, nose and throat. As evidenced by archaeological findings, the Mount Amiata thermal waters were well known among the Etruscans and the Romans.

What makes Amiata thermal pools so special is the fact that they are located inside the fresh and unpolluted climate of the mountain and the extraordinary variety of nature that transform the thermal experience in a true moment of wellness for the body and the soul. There are thermal localities with free natural pools or luxurious spa resorts where you can enjoy additional services such as massages and treatments.

In other words, its volcanic nature makes the Mount Amiata one of the main references for thermal waters in Tuscany. The volcano, although dormant for thousands of years, continues to live under the 'great green cloak' still giving nourishment and energy to the surroundings. Mount Amiata is set up as a magical place, ideal for those who want to regenerate and restore the genuine pace of nature in the enchanted setting of Tuscany.
